Year 7 Girls Carnegie National Final
Hollingworth BEC (Rochdale) 36 v 0 De La Salle (St Helens)
Hollingworth lifted the Carnegie Champion Schools Year 7 Girls title after a comprehensive victory over De La Salle.
Led by inspirational captain Hayley Fielding, the Rochdale school raced into a 16-0 lead by the interval and they continued their dominance in the second period with a further 20 unanswered points.
After a tense first five minutes the game soon sprang to life with Fielding crossing for the first try of the day following a sensational break from just over half way. The platform was set by Hollingworth’s powerful forwards Courtney Steele and Tyffanie Brook – who made excellent yards throughout the game.
In the remaining 10 minutes of the first half, Fielding had crossed twice more thanks to some wonderful offloads by Sophie Holden, who had a tremendous game and a further effort from Shannon Laycock again courtesy of some good hands by Holden completed the first half scoring.
Despite a valiant effort from the St Helens based De La Salle, the second half continued in much the same vain as the first, with Fielding taking just five minutes to add her fourth and fifth tries of the game.
De La Salle tried to increase the tempo, but some good defence By Patsy Lindley and Courtney Burrell kept them out. The scoring was far from finished as Shannon Laycock scored twice to complete her hat trick, whilst Charlie Maynock also got over the line in the 35th minute.
Despite the one-sided score line De La Salle showed great determination and kept going right up until the final whistle.
The defensive effort from Hollingworth was outstanding and every member of their team played a huge part in ensuring that De La Salle were kept score less.
Player of the match – selected by the RFL and winner of the Sophie Cox medal was Hollingworth’s captain Hayley Fielding.
