KEY STAGE 3 ART AND DESIGN
As a department we fully support and implement the aims and purposes of art and design outlined within the National Curriculum. Throughout the academic year, pupils are taught in a range of both 2 and 3 dimensional art and design disciplines.
Working on a three term basis, all pupils undertake a balance of work involving:
Drawing and painting
Surface decoration
3 dimensional studies.
There is a steady progression in complexity of tasks and skills through years 7 – 9. Each work area, although following the same ethos and termly themes, will vary in both teaching style and experience.
KEY STAGE 4 ART AND DESIGN
At present we offer three GCSE courses and AS Level at KS4:
AQA Art and Design Textiles
EDEXCEL (unendorsed) Art and Design
AQA/EDEXCEL Graphic Design
TEACHING & LEARNING
Both KS3 and KS4 are taught in mixed ability groups. At KS4 our groups at present comprise of 96 pupils in year 11 and 121 in year 10.
Our Gifted & Talented year 9 & 10 pupils are at present involved in an accelerated GCSE Art & Design (unendorsed) course. This course leads on to AS Level Art & Design in year 11.
KS3 teaching groups comprise of 20 pupils per group.

Ceramic facilities including two kilns.
Machine embroidery facilities.
The school has a good LRC, which along with the department, offers a well stocked selection of books on artist and techniques.

ASSESSMENT
Pupils at KS3 & 4 are assessed regularly in line with school policy.
KEY STAGE 3

KEY STAGE 4
Work is marked in line with exam board requirements:
e.g. 60% marks for coursework and 40% for timed exam work

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Early doors and after school activities are popular with our KS4 pupils. In addition, our pupils are able to pick up extra art lessons during period 6 on Mondays and Tuesdays; these sessions serve as a useful extension to the work produced in lesson.
Through the Excellence in Cities initiative our Gifted & Talented pupils have been able to work in a variety of ‘Masterclasses’ at Hopwood Hall College.
