Dance


Introduction to Department

The Dance department has a large dance studio with mirrors, ballet barres and computer and sound equipment.

Parts of Curriculum Covered

Key Stage 3

As a department we fully support and implement the aims and purposes of dance, through the Physical Education National Curriculum.

Throughout Key Stage 3 the pupils are involved in performing, cososing and appreciating a range of dance styles.

In Year 7 they study:

Contact dance
Street dance
West side story

In Year 8 they study:

Swansong
Matrix
Carnival / Computer games

In Year 9 they study:

Chance dance
City landscapes
Physical theatre / Ludus

There is a steady preogression in the complexity of tasks and skills through years 7 to 9.

Key Stage 4

At present we offer GCSE Performing Arts: Dance (AQA) 2 year course.

This consists of the following:

80% Pratical work, split into:

20% Performance piece
20% Set study
40% Choreography (Solo)

20% Written work, including:

2hr Written exam (3 Sections: Health & Safety, Set work and Essay.)

All elements work under the 3 strands, Composition, Performance and Appreciation.

Teaching and Learning

Both KS3 and KS4 are taught in mixed ability groups. At KS4 our groups at present comprise of 32 pupils in year 11 and 37 pupils in year 10.

KS3 teaching groups comprise of 30 pupils per group.

The school has a good LRC, which along with the department, offers a wide range of books related to Dance.
Excellent support packs to accompany eache scheme of work.

Assesment

At KS3 and KS4 pupils are marked in line with the school policy. at KS3 at the end of each scheme of work each pupil is given an effort and a national curriculum grade. At KS4 work is marked in line with the exam board AQA for the 80% practical. The 20% written work is marked by AQA themselves.

Special Education Needs

Pupils with special educational needs are clearly identified in school. The department then provides differeciated tasks for each pupil involved.

Extra Curricular Activites

As a practical department extra curricular is very important and also fundamental to the progress of the pupils.

Each dance club creates a new choreography every term and perfoms at our three shows. The Christmas show, Evening of dance and Summer show. Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in other festivals such as The dance festival at Rochdale Town Hall, Gracie Fields Theatre, Spiral dance, Youth dance projects.

Clubs are held every week at the following times:

Monday Year 7, 2:50 - 3:50 pm
Monday Year 10, 3:50 - 4:50 pm
Tuesday Year 11, 3:50 - 4:50 pm
Wednesday Year 8, 2:50 - 3:50 pm
Thursday Year 9, 1:50 - 2:50 pm
