Food Technology


Introduction to Department

There are two fitted practical rooms and a smaller room used for demonstrations. There is an interactive whiteboard and students use provided laptops for the incorporated ICT work. The department is lively, engaging in extra curricular activities.  The department consists of 3 teachers and a technician who supports the department throughout the week.

Brief Overview of the Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Food Technology and Food and Nutrition are taught to Year 8 & 9. Pupils are taught about different food groups which link to practical lessons.  Pupils are taught one lesson per week for one hour and practical’s lessons are every two weeks.  Pupils complete relevant booklets and have homework worksheet relevant to the subject. There is emphasis on practical work and learning basic skills is a priority in each topic. Pupils are given assessment levels for their practical work and booklets are assessed every half term where targets are set for each student. Group sizes number up to 18 max with both girls and boys of mixed ability.

Key Stage 4

The department offers GCSE Catering to all year 9 pupils. GCSE Catering is heavily practical based and consists of three lessons a week. Each week the lessons are broken down into:

Lesson 1 – Theory lesson
Lesson 2 – Demonstration lesson
Lesson 3 – Practical lesson

Pupils are taught the following topics

  1. The Catering Industry
  2. Nutrition and Menu Planning
  3. Food Production
  4. Technological Developments

How pupils are assessed

There are two levels:-

Higher                      (A*ABCD)
Foundation                 (CDEFG)

Both levels require

Written examination       40%
Coursework                     20%
Practical exams               40%

There are two practical exams completed in:

Yr10 for 2 hours             15%
Yr11 for 3 hours             25%
