Science


Introduction to Department

The department has nine ten teachers.

The department has six laboratories and two computer suites consisting of 14 and 15 networked computers. All staff have a laptop and most rooms are fully equipped with and interactive whiteboards and data projector.

The department is generously resourced with text books and specialist equipment and is supported by two full-time technicians.  There are comprehensive schemes of work in place in KS3 and KS4.  The KS3 science strategy is fully implemented in years seven, eight and nine.  The changes regarding the KS4 Programme of study (September 2006) are currently being addressed, the examination board to be followed is AQA GCSE Science core in year 10 followed by additional science in year 11.

Parts of Curriculum Covered

At KS3 the Heinnemann scheme is followed and the current KS4 cohorts follow AQA double award (coordinated), single Award (Modular).  The examination results bear favourable comparison with national figures. 

The 2005 GCSE results reached their highest level with 53% of the pupils achieving at least a grade C. 

The 2005 KS3 results at level 5 and above were 78% and 43% level 6 and above these being amongst the best in Rochdale.

With the exception of year 7 where mixed ability groups are taught, each year of eight tutor groups is split in half and then the four tutors groups are set into five sets. These are constructed according to ability.
